If you’ve been following Green in BKLYN on Twitter & Facebook, you’ll have seen a bunch of new stuff that we’ve gotten into the shop. But for those of you that aren’t checking our feeds daily (shocking!), here’s a brief update in visual form for your edification & enjoyment:
(The dog’s not new or a product. Just shop dog, Lola, getting up in the morning. Coffee, anyone?)…
“There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.”
– Albert Einstein
Green in BKLYN was featured on Brooklyn Independent Television’s Brooklyn Review for Earth Day! Very exciting & a little like an awesome home movie…

Just around the corner is our favorite holiday… It’s Earth Day, of course! Kind of like Mother’s Day but for your other mother (Earth).
As the eco-friendly shop we are & ‘cuz it’s also the shop’s anniversary (three years this year), we love this day! And in celebration, we’d love you to love it too.
So we’ve scheduled a few things we thought you might like. This year, along with Myrtle Avenue’s Farm to Neighborhood program, we’re focusing on local food sources and ways to make your own (food, that is). Also a big ol’ sale and a raffle! Details are below…
EARTH DAY SCHEDULE (SUNDAY, APRIL 22nd):
We hope you’ll join us for some (or all) of the fun on Earth Day. We love Earth Day, we love being here & we love you!
Brooklyn Dirt Talk Three: Post-OWS Grass Roots Organizing takes place this month with advice from experienced Brooklyn leaders on founding, motivating and evaluating for grass roots organizations. Panelists include folks from Sustainable Flatbush as well as Compost for Brooklyn. The event is hosted by Meera Bhat.
Who, What, Where, etc.
Sustainable Flatbush brings neighbors together to mobilize, educate and advocate for sustainable living in their Brooklyn neighborhood and beyond and is founded by Anne Pope. For more info: http://sustainableflatbush.org/.
Compost for Brooklyn In March 2010, the corner lot on Newkirk Avenue and East 8th Street was vacant, unused, and full of trash. With no funding and a single shovel, neighbors and friends came together to tackle the project of transforming the space into a community composting project. In 2011, Compost for Brooklyn composted 50,000 pounds of food scraps and yard waste from about 200 households, welcomed 4500 visitors and formed lasting partnerships with numerous organizations from the local level to the international. For more info: http://compostforbrooklyn.org/.
Today from 8:30-9:30pm, Green in BKLYN will shut off our lights and electricity. We’ll be participating in Earth Hour, a world-wide event, and we hope you’ll join in too.
As they say on the World Wildlife Fund‘s blog site,
“We only have one planet. You can help protect it (by) participating in the world’s largest single campaign for the planet: Earth Hour. It starts by turning off your lights for an hour at 8:30 pm on March 31, 2012 in a collective display of commitment to a better future for the planet.
Think what can be achieved when we all come together for a common cause.”
One hour, one day, all seven continents, thousands of cities, at hundreds of landmarks and with hundreds of millions of people around the world. It’s big, it’s powerful and it’s easy.
Enjoy the dark and the quiet for an hour tonight so we can enjoy each other and the planet for many, many more years.

In Celebration of Earth Day’s 42nd Anniversary & Green in BKLYN’s B-Earth Day (3 years old!) we’ll have all kinds of treasures marked 42% off! All month long.
So, starting on April Fool’s Day (4/1) and continuing on till all the good stuff’s gone, we’ll have select treasures marked at 42% off!
You’ll find the sale stuff in the bottoms drawer(s) of our dresser. Check it often, check it carefully – new stuff will be in there all the time & there’s all kinds of treasure. Fun, cheap & green. Yay!
They just came in… The most lovely BKLYN diner mug that tops all mugs to date!
Designed here in BKLYN & crafted with care in the USA, these beautiful mugs are the quintessential diner coffee/tea/cocoa cache with a serious borough twist!
Plus, their introduction into the shop allowed me to meet two of the loveliest shop owners/designers in BKLYN – Lim & Michael from enamoo (over on Smith Street). Enamoo is filled with their Brooklyn themed designs as well as groovy vintage stuff. Definitely worth a visit.
I hope to add more enamoo designs here at the shop (awesome silkscreens & baseball caps, perhaps?). In the meantime, we’ve got the BKLYN diner mug as long as they’re available. Yay, BKLYN!
