September’s Almost Here…

Posted by Green in BKLYN On July - 28 - 2010 Comments Off on September’s Almost Here…

Here at Green in BKLYN we’re gearing up for the Avenue’s annual “Move About Myrtle”.

Every Sunday in September, Myrtle is closed to car traffic – leaving the streets between Clermont & Hall Avenues open to foot traffic.  And a ton of events sponsored by Myrtle Avenue’s local merchants & residents.

This year, Green in BKLYN will be hosting all kinds of wonderful stuff including:

  • A return of the “big bike thing” – a 2 person bike with 9′ wheels!
  • Local ‘hood honey extraction with the Three Sisters & their handmade honey jar labels
  • Book signings by numerous local authors (thank you authors!)
  • A new art installation & demo with internationally renowned dog artist, Tillamook Cheddar
  • Composting Q&A with Embokashi Compost folks
  • A Recycle Your Books drive for our local kids
  • And, our own e-Waste Drive here at Green in BKLYN!

It should be an amazing September – here at Green in BKLYN as well as on Myrtle Avenue.  Stay tuned for more information.  We’ll have it here soon.  After all, September’s almost here…

So that means if you pick up any of their hair care products including…

  • Sea Mist Sea Salt Spray with Lavender

… then you get to try a sample of another John Masters’ product for free!

It’s hard to choose between the myriad of options especially since they’re all so good & have won so many awards including these products, which we also have in the shop:

  • Deep Scalp Follicle Treatment & Volumizer for Thinning Hair (Shape’s – Best Hair Care)
  • Sweet Orange & Silk Protein Styling Gel (Natural Solutions Magazine – Best Styling Gel)

  • No animal testing
  • No artificial colors, fragrances or fillers

  • All ingredients must be proven to be beneficial to the hair or skin
  • All ingredients must be harvested in an environmentally-friendly manner
  • And, of course, all ingredients must be as organic, bio-degradable &  fair-trade as possible

10 Ways to Stay Cool (w/o AC)

Posted by Green in BKLYN On July - 7 - 2010 Comments Off on 10 Ways to Stay Cool (w/o AC)

Holy Moley! Out here in BKLYN it’s hot as, well, the hottest days of the year-to-date.

Our focus in the shop continues to be on greening the planet & living an eco-friendly life.  But we’re fine tuning that this week to focus on keeping our cool…

So here are some suggestions on how to stay cool.  Low energy style.  Without air conditioning.  Though you can definitely combine them with AC – especially with temps in the triple digits!

  1. If you want to get into the outdoors, do it carefully. Usually the early morning & evening are cooled down enough to enjoy your walk, run, hike, bike, gardening or yard work.  Just be sure to stay hydrated while you’re out there!
  2. Soak your feet in a bucket of cold water. Or your wrists.  The body radiates heat from the hands, feet, face & ears, so cooling any of these will efficiently cool the body.
  3. Put your sweaty self in the path of a cool breeze or fan. Water vapor produced by sweating takes heat away from your body if it’s exposed to air & allowed to evaporate.  So make the fan your friend.
  4. Dress – or undress – as is appropriate. Naked, next-to-nothing, natural fibers &/or light colored clothing (which reflects light rather than attracts it) are all options for keeping your cool while choosing your dress.
  5. Keep it moving. The air that is…  In the evening, open windows & use fans to create a cross-breeze, circulating cooler evening/night air through the rooms.  When the sun hits your building in the morning, close the windows, shades & doors & keep them closed till it’s cooler outside than in.  PS – Leaving kitchen cabinets open all night helps too.  If you leave them closed, they store heat & your home won’t cool off as much.
  6. Turn off electrical heat sources including the stove, incandescent light bulbs & computers.  Don’t use the stove or oven to eat.  If you have to heat your food, use a microwave.  Incandescent light bulbs create heat so switch to compact fluorescents (CFLs).  Turn off lamps, computers, TVS – all that hot stuff – when not in use.
  7. Adjust your pilot light.  Or turn it off. If you have a gas stove with pilot lights, make sure they’re set correctly.  Too high & they’ll produce excess heat. Or, just turn the gas off for the summer.
  8. Eat spicy food. Spicy food increases perspiration which cools the body as it evaporates.  It can cause an endorphin rush that is lovely & could make you forget about the heat.  Maybe.
  9. Try a hint of mint. Slather on lotion with peppermint, shower with peppermint soap or use a minty foot soak.  Mint refreshes the skin & leaves a nice cooling sensation.  It also takes yummy!
  10. If all else fails, go to the mall, library, church, movie theater or some other air-conditioned public building.

  • LOCATION: Tekserve @ 119 W. 23rd St. (btw. 6 & 7 Ave.)

WHY RECYCLE YOUR ELECTRONICS?

The components in many electronics can be incredibly hazardous to the environment – contributing up to 70% of the toxins found in landfills – so it’s important that they’re properly recycled.  Sponsored collection events are one of the easiest ways to properly dispose of your old gadgets in NYC.

Stone Sculptures from Zimbabwe

Posted by Green in BKLYN On June - 25 - 2010 Comments Off on Stone Sculptures from Zimbabwe

When I first began to work on the idea for Green in BKLYN, I went to CAMBA.  They helped me with my business plan, financials, loans, legal aid & more.  They’re the first place I recommend to anyone starting a small business.  But they provide so much more…

CAMBA is a non-profit agency that provides services that connect people with opportunities to enhance their quality of life.  CAMBA offers integrated services & programs in Economic Development, Education & Youth Development, Legal & Housing Services & Development, Family Support Services & HIV/AIDS Services.  CAMBA serves more than 35,000 individuals & families each year with the majority of clients living, working &/or attending school in Brooklyn.

Since 1991, CAMBA has been one of the world’s premier purveyors of Shona Sculptures.  Shona sculptures are created by the internationally renowned sculptors of Zimbabwe, a country whose name literally means “house of stone.”  The work of Shona sculptors is inspired by deeply held spiritual beliefs, folklore & daily life.  Zimbabwe’s unstable political climate now makes it difficult for its artists to find a market for their unique sculptures.

CAMBA’s commitment to maintaining a Shona gallery provides the artists with the opportunity to continue their artistic endeavors, as well as for the art to be offered at reasonable prices & the sales to benefit CAMBA’s programs & services – allowing them to continue to help people improve their lives.

CAMBA’s Annual Benefit Sale of Shona Stone Sculptures from Zimbabwe takes place June 24-27.  If you’re interested in viewing the collection & making a purchase, contact CAMBA.

Make Music New York in BKLYN

Posted by Green in BKLYN On June - 22 - 2010 Comments Off on Make Music New York in BKLYN

Yesterday was big stuff…  The first day of Summer.  Make Music New York’s musical celebration of free, live music across NYC.  And Green in BKLYN’s hosting of said free, live music…

Early in the day, Carolyn Leonhart & Jay Leonhart joined us for some glorious jazz – on upright bass & vocals.  And, at the end of the day, Claire “Raji” Rodriguez stopped by with vocals & some classic Broadway tunes & folk music.

Lady & a Tramp’s Bloglife describes a moment with the Leonharts “as the sound of Jay’s combination upright bass & scat playing style peek(s) from under the warm blanket of sound (in which) his daughter Carolyn’s incredibly mesmerizing & soulful voice covers you.”  They also captured some great footage of the duo.  You can see & hear “Sometimes I Think” by clicking here or “The Bass Lessonhere.
