Every Sunday through July 7th, Myrtle Avenue is sponsoring FREE DIY workshops & classes just around the corner from Green in BKLYN.
In the CitiBank Parking Lot – at Clinton and Myrtle Avenues – from 11am to 4pm every Sunday, learn how to make, do, create all kinds of wonderful things from old stuff. From papermaking to puppet making and comic books to Calder-inspired mobiles, there’s a new skill or hobby out there for everyone!
For more information, go to the Myrtle Avenue Brooklyn Partnership website. You can learn more about the classes and pre-register there or show up on one of the next three Sundays!
Make Music New York is a live, free musical celebration taking place each June 21, the longest day of the year.
On that day in NYC hundreds of public spaces throughout the five boroughs will become impromptu stages for over 1,000 FREE concerts.
This year Green in BKLYN hosts a bunch of wonderful artists for Make Music NYC. We hope you’ll join us & other venues in celebrating music and the awesome musicians who make it!
MMNY at Green in BKLYN – Friday, June 21st
The SONY Studio Stroll returns on June 8 and 9 – this Saturday and Sunday – from 12-6pm. And it’s FREE.
The Stroll is a self-guided tour of SONYA (South Of the Navy Yard Artists) members’ studios as well as other spaces displaying these artists’ works.
It takes place in Fort Greene, Clinton Hill, Wallabout and parts of Bed-Stuy. And this year Green in BKLYN hosts artist Valerie Williams.
To participate in the Stroll, download the SONYA Stroll map. Free art is always a good thing! Enjoy some this weekend.
Ever since we opened four years ago – on Earth Day 2009 – we’ve been helping folks recycle stuff… by answering their questions about what and where to recycle, posting recycling events and information as well as accepting #5 plastics from our customers and shipping them off to one of our vendors for recycling.
Well, no more. Actually, we’ll keep doing most everything we’ve been doing to help facilitate the beautiful cycle of reducing, reusing and recycling. But…
As of May 1st, we’ll no longer accept #5 plastics at Green in BKLYN. Why? Because the City of New York has recently expanded it’s plastics recycling program and now takes nearly every type there is as explained below:
If you receive NYC Department of Sanitation collection service, you can now recycle all rigid plastics along with your metal, glass bottles & jars, and beverage cartons. Don’t forget to also recycle your paper and cardboard, collected separately from designated metal, glass, and plastic recyclables.
Rigid plastics includes containers, packaging, and products that are made predominantly or entirely of plastic and have a relatively inflexible shape or form.
Examples of rigid plastics include:
For items not listed above, there are mandatory take back programs. For more info on take-back programs, see Take It Back NYC. And for more information on what’s recyclable, see What to Recycle with Sanitation.

Spring (cleaning) is here and the Lower East Side Ecology Center (LESEC) has scheduled a number of electronic waste events to help clear old and unwanted electronics out of your closets without trashing the environment! Drop-off your tech gear at locations in all five boroughs during March, April and May to have it responsibly recycled.
A list of acceptable materials can be found here. LESEC accepts electronics from households, not-for-profit organizations and small businesses (less than 50 employees) but they don’t accept home appliances such as microwaves, refrigerators, air conditioners, vacuum cleaners, kitchen appliances, etc. They also do not accept carbon monoxide and smoke detectors.
For directions, flyers and more information, go to LESEC’s website.
Also, check out their E-Waste Warehouse if you can’t make it to one of their events.

Arthur Wood’s been living in the Broken Angel House (below) for 34 years. It’s a piece of art, a labor of love and a neighborhood institution. Now, at the age of 82, he’s scheduled to be evicted from his home after a 6-year fight.
A pair of events is scheduled to raise funds for Arthur’s legal fees and to help put him in a new home. Those who can’t make it are invited to contribute to the Broken Angel fund.
The first event is Friday, March 15th from 4-8pm in the back yard of the Broken Angel House (48 Downing Street) – a peaceful, sober, DIY afternoon gathering of folks who wish to give support to Arthur as he peacefully moves on to a new life outside of his building. It’s a kid-friendly community gathering and display of creativity. There will be musicians, dancers, an auction of some of Arthur’s art, dancing, a brass band, costume wearing, food, celebrity guests, non-boozy drinks and more. Hats will be passed.
After the block party – from 8pm-1am – adults aged 21 and older are invited to a rousing dance party fundraiser at the Irondale Center located at 85 South Oxford Street – a 15 minute walk from Broken Angel House, near Barclay’s center and lots of trains. The bands and DJ’s will be excellent, the drinks will be delicious and all will be reasonably priced. Admission is ten dollars and the door is by Guncle.
This building and these events are an historical part of Brooklyn’s history. If you can, please be a part of the moment. And for more info, go to the Broken Angel Facebook page.
